Alison Fields


Director of the OU School of Visual Arts Mary Lou Milner Carver Professor of Art of the American West Professor of Art History Alison Fields serves as Director of the University of Oklahoma School of Visual Arts, where she is the Mary Lou Milner Carver Professor of Art of the American West and Professor of Art History. She teaches courses in visual culture, western cinema, public memory, museum studies, and art and technology, bringing an interdisciplinary perspective shaped by appointments across multiple OU programs. Fields earned a bachelor's degree from Colgate University, a master's degree from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. Her research explores visual culture, public memory, Indigenous studies, and the American West through scholarship that bridges art history and cultural studies. She is the author and co-author of several award-winning books, including Discordant Memories: Atomic Age Narratives and Visual Culture, Picher, Oklahoma: Catastrophe, Memory, and Trauma, and Chickasaw Women Artisans, which received the Independent Book Publishers Association Independent Spirit Award. She has also co-edited Resisting the Nuclear: Art and Activism Across the Pacific and published extensively in leading academic journals.

Brent Richardson

Brent Richardson


Instructor of Art, Technology & Culture Brent Richardson is an Instructor in Art, Technology & Culture at the University of Oklahoma School of Visual Arts. His teaching and creative practice explore the intersection of technology, play, digital fabrication, and human interaction. Richardson earned his MFA in Art, Technology, and Culture from the University of Oklahoma after studying art at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Drawing on experience in museum exhibit design, maker education, and digital fabrication, he creates collaborative projects that encourage creativity through hands-on learning. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has developed interactive experiences for museums, cultural institutions, and community organizations. Richardson also helped establish Fab Lab Houston, expanding access to digital fabrication and maker education. His work reflects a commitment to experimentation, curiosity, and using art and technology to foster learning, creativity, and meaningful community engagement.

Cathleen Faubert


Associate Professor of Art, Technology & Culture Cathleen Faubert is an Associate Professor of Art, Technology & Culture at the University of Oklahoma School of Visual Arts. Her interdisciplinary creative practice combines video, photography, installation, and olfactory art to examine the relationships between memory, place, ecology, and the human senses. Faubert earned her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her research investigates scent as a form of cultural language, exploring how smell can reveal connections to landscapes, disrupted ecosystems, and lived experience. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and artist residencies have shaped her ongoing research into scent mapping and environmental change. Through her teaching and creative scholarship, Faubert encourages students to explore emerging media while considering the sensory, cultural, and ecological dimensions of artistic practice.

Charlie Kim


Instructor of Art, Technology, and Culture Charlie Kim is an Instructor of Art, Technology & Culture at the University of Oklahoma, where he teaches courses that connect digital art, interactive media, and emerging technologies. He also serves as Director of Interactive Media at OU's K20 Center, leading teams that develop educational games, animations, videos, and other digital learning experiences. Kim earned a Master of Arts and Technology from the University of Oklahoma and brings industry experience as a 3D artist and digital content creator. He has worked with leading game studios and technology companies, including Amazon Game Studios and Daybreak Game Company. His professional and academic work focuses on combining art, technology, and interactive media to create engaging educational experiences while preparing students for careers in game development, digital content creation, and the creative industries.

Ken Marold

Ken Marold


Architecture Coordinator & Lead Faculty for the American School Design Build Ken Marold is an architect, interdisciplinary designer, and educator whose work explores the intersection of design, digital fabrication, immersive technology, and community engagement. He serves as Architecture Coordinator and Lead Faculty for the American School Design Build program in the University of Oklahoma's Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture and also teaches in the School of Visual Arts. Marold's teaching spans architecture, mixed reality, game engines, interactive media, and computational design, helping students combine emerging technologies with hands-on making and collaborative design. His research focuses on digital fabrication, virtual and augmented reality, design-build education, and the ways technology can shape human experience and civic spaces. In addition to his academic work, Marold is the founder of Prairiefire Design Build and MakeCodePlay. His architectural, fabrication, and interactive media projects have been featured by museums, cultural institutions, and exhibitions, including the Science Museum Oklahoma, Oklahoma Contemporary, Factory Obscura, the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, and the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Tess Elliot


Assistant Professor of Art, Technology & Culture Tess Elliot is an Assistant Professor of Art, Technology & Culture at the University of Oklahoma. Her creative practice combines traditional and emerging media, including animation, virtual reality, augmented reality, installation, and small-gauge film to explore storytelling through moving images. Elliot studied at the University of the Arts Berlin before earning her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and her MFA in Art & Technology from The Ohio State University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at galleries and film festivals across the United States and abroad. She has also completed artist residencies with Oklahoma Contemporary and Kintai Arts in Lithuania. Through her teaching and creative practice, Elliot encourages students to experiment across disciplines while exploring the creative possibilities of emerging technologies.

Course Details

The Master of Art and Technology program delivers a forward-thinking curriculum that fuses art history, design theory, and emerging technologies to fuel digital creativity. You will gain hands-on experience using industry-standard programming languages, tools, and workflows to produce compelling moving images, visual effects, and 2D and 3D animations.

This program equips you with the technical skills and creative insight to thrive in today’s digital media landscape, blending conceptual foundations with real-world production techniques.

Course Structure

You’ll earn 33 credit hours across 11 courses. During the Spring and Fall semesters, you’ll take two courses per 16 weeks. During the Summer semester, courses take place in two 7-week modules. You’ll take two courses in one module and one course in the other. There are also three 14-week courses each summer: Mixed Reality, Professional Project, and Professional Forum (capstone courses).

Courses are a blend of Asynchronous and synchronous coursework. Some courses feature live online lectures, while others do not. Students are encouraged to check their syllabus to determine if live sessions take place. Attendance in live sessions is strongly recommended, but not mandatory. Classes generally are in evenings Monday through Thursday either starting at 6 or 7p.m. CST

You can expect a time commitment of 20 to 25 hours per week for two classes in a Spring/Fall term.

History and Theory of Art and Technology

Credit Hours: 3

This seminar explores the history and theory of art and technology from the emergence of modernity to the present day. Through a combination of online discussion posts and seminar-style dialogue, students engage with notable texts in art history, digital art, visual culture, and media studies. The course culminates in a final paper that critically examines a project the student has created or proposes to develop, allowing for reflective analysis and integration of course themes.

Emerging Art and Technology

Credit Hours: 3

This seminar-style course examines the current state of emerging technologies and their relation to art in order to help students position themselves within the field by equipping them with knowledge necessary to anticipate its future shape. Structured around readings, screenings and other media content, the course provides students with a clear sense of what is coming.

3-D Animation Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course provides students with an overview of 3D animation methods within the context of contemporary art. Students learn introductory to advanced techniques using industry-standard software to produce virtual objects, environments, materials, character rigs, keyframe animations, procedural animations, and dynamics FX.

Moving Image Production

Credit Hours: 3

This studio course provides students with one-on-one and group feedback for self-directed projects of time-based media. Students will develop their work within a theoretical and conceptual framework, learning and applying the principles of interactivity in art and design. The course includes screenings, discussions, and critiques.

Interactive Media Production

Credit Hours: 3

This studio course provides students with one-on-one and group feedback for self-directed projects in interactive media. Students will develop their work within a theoretical and conceptual framework, learning and applying the principles of interactivity in art and design. The course includes screenings, discussions, and critiques.

Professional Project

Credit Hours: 3

This course is the culmination of the Art and Technology degree program. Each student develops and implements an individual project relevant to their interests. This course is taught as an independent study with students checking in regularly with the instructor as they conceptualize and execute their final thesis project for completion of the program.

Creative Coding Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course introduces the computer as an art production tool. Students work to understand computer code as a malleable form within the context of contemporary art. Students learn the basic structure and languages of OOP (Object Oriented Programming) including, but not limited to JavaScript, C#, and Python.

Video and Sound Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course provides students with an overview of digital video and audio practices within the context of contemporary art. Students learn introductory to advanced methods using technical equipment and industry-standard software (Adobe Products) for video capture, audio capture, lighting, and post-production.

Motion Graphics Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course provides students with an overview of the methods and techniques relating to motion graphics. Students learn industry-standard software (Adobe After Effects) for the successful creation of graphic and photographic moving images including, but not limited to, keyframe 2D animation, digital compositing, effective communication in moving text, and 2D procedural effects.

Game Engine Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course provides students with an overview of game engine software to produce narrative and experimental screen-based interactive media within the context of contemporary art. Students learn introductory to advanced techniques including, but not limited to importing models and characters, virtual lighting and terrain building, animating game objects, scripting interactivity, and exporting playable content.

Mixed Reality Techniques

Credit Hours: 3

This course provides an overview of emerging visual technologies within the context of contemporary art. Students are introduced to technical equipment and industry-standard software for virtual and augmented reality production, including, but not limited to, deployment of interactive experiences to headsets, programming controllers, integration of virtual environments with live video capture, app development, and web-based mixed reality.

Professional Forum

Credit Hours: 3

The aim of this course is to ensure successful completion of the thesis project through cultivation of a peer feedback group, constructive criticism, and positive reinforcement. Additionally, the course helps students to develop language skills for discussing the work that they are doing and confidence in presenting their work to others.
