Online Course Delivery Options
Most online classes are offered in an asynchronous format. Some classes, however, may be synchronous or offer optional synchronous opportunities. Check your class schedule and syllabus to find out the format.
Synchronous Courses
Class sessions run in real-time. You will attend online classes and interact with instructors and classmates at a time indicated on your class schedule.
Asynchronous Courses
You will access material for each class session, complete your assignments, communicate with instructors, and interact with classmates on your schedule.
Set yourself up for success as an online student by following these helpful tips.
1. Schedule the same time each week to do your work.
Develop a set time and place to devote to your coursework each week. This will allow you to create a stable routine where you can focus your full attention on your studies.
2. Keep track of your assignments; stay informed and connected.
Look at your syllabus on the first day of class and make note of all major assignments so you can plan ahead and balance your work/life commitments. Check your Canvas account, email, and other messages daily to ensure you’re up-to-date with any assignments or due date changes.
3. Be strategic about course readings.
Don’t underestimate the amount of time it will take to complete readings and other coursework. Refer to your course syllabus and plan accordingly to give yourself plenty of time to read, take notes, and complete assignments.
4. Stay in touch with your instructor.
Reach out to your instructor to introduce yourself and ask questions, both before and during the course. Be proactive in asking for clarification or help. Your instructor wants to help you succeed.
5. Schedule ample time for online exams and quizzes.
Similar to completing your coursework, you don’t want to underestimate the amount of time it will take to complete an online exam or quiz. Ask your instructor how much time you should set aside and plan accordingly.
6. Ask for help.
Your professors want you to be successful in your coursework, so don’t hesitate to ask them for help. Your classmates can also be a great resource. Requesting clarification or guidance is part of the learning process, so don’t be afraid to ask for assistance.
7. Check in with your online course every day.
Check your OU email and Canvas account every day for updates to notifications, course assignments, discussion boards, readings, and more. Staying engaged will help you stay organized and on top of your coursework.
