Program breakdown

The OU online M.S. in Applied Statistics (MSAS) program is structured to provide students with a firm understanding of statistical concepts and statistical analysis across disciplinary boundaries. 

With an interest in driving critical decisions, students learn to leverage technical and mathematical skills to be crucial problem solvers within their organizations, using data and technologies to drive business improvements and changes.

This program allows students to begin their curriculum in either the spring, summer, or fall terms.

Emphasizing data management and analytics skills, students will take foundational courses in the following areas:

  • Scientific computing
  • Classical and Bayesian paradigms of statistics
  • Data management and analytics
  • Ethics related to applying data
  • Project-oriented capstone course focused on consulting/communication
  • Essential tools include R, SAS, SQL, Linux Bash Shell, Stan, and JAGS

Core Courses (6 credit hours)

  • Ethics in Statistical Practice
    Learn how to ethically conduct statistical analysis in a world where data collection and privacy concerns are becoming ubiquitous. 
  • Statistical Consulting and Communication
    Learn how to collaborate and communicate effectively with non-statisticians to answer their subject matter questions. 

Electives (24 credit hours)

  • Introduction to Mathematical Statistics
    Learn mathematical development of basic concepts in statistics.
  • Introduction to Scientific Computing
    Learn the fundamental computational tools used in statistics. 
  • Applied Statistical Methods
    Learn applications of statistical methods.
  • Database Design for Informational Organization
    Learn the conceptual foundations of database design and theory and practical applications of design and theory to real-world database designs.  
  • Applied Regression Analysis
    Learn how to select the “best” regression equation.
  • Advanced Data Analytics
    Learn about applying data analytic theories and models to solve real-world problems using various unsupervised and supervised models.
  • Advanced Applied Statistics
    Survey advanced applied statistical methods.
  • Bayesian Statistics
    Course topics are models, probability, Bayes’ Rule and R, inference to a binomial probability, and the generalized linear model.
HOW TO APPLY

To apply to the online Master of Science in Applied Statistics program, you must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent) and provide the following:

  • Complete the online application at https://gograd.ou.edu/apply/
  • Official transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate institutions
  • Written personal statement on career goals and reasons for applying to the program
  • Professional resume that includes past education and work experience
  • GRE scores*
  • TOEFL exam score**

* GRE scores are optional and not required for admission but may be required by potential faculty sponsors to be considered for a Qualifying Graduate Assistantship.

**TOEFL exam required for international students

The admissions committee operates under a rolling admission process, and admissions may continue until two weeks before classes start. The committee strives to respond to all applicants within two weeks of submitting a completed application.

Tuition and fees for the program are $24,540 ($818 per credit). Books and additional materials are not included.

Once accepted into the program, students must submit a $350 non-refundable deposit within two weeks. Deposits are applied toward tuition expenses and secure a student’s place in the upcoming class. There is no application fee for this degree.
